Rethinking the Everyday Switch

In 2005, during my studies in Industrial Design at the Munich University of Applied Sciences, I participated in a collaborative design competition with Popp Elektro GmbH. The project focused on rethinking one of the most ubiquitous yet overlooked objects in our daily environment: the light switch.

Switches are deeply embedded in our behavioral patterns. They are used instinctively—without conscious thought—and have long existed as purely functional, standardized elements within the built environment. While living spaces have increasingly evolved in terms of aesthetics and personalization, the design of switches has largely remained static, becoming visually interchangeable and conceptually neutral.

Escaping Convention – Enter a New Interaction

The objective of this project was to challenge the conventional perception of the light switch by exploring how such a simple interface can respond to contemporary lifestyles, evolving aesthetic expectations, and the emotional relationship between users and everyday technology.

By adopting the familiar, slightly concave square geometry of traditional computer keyboard keys, the switch becomes instantly recognizable and intuitive to use. The form is deliberately minimal, yet rich in meaning—transforming a passive, often overlooked object into an interface that communicates through shared cultural and digital references. The project highlights the potential of so-called low-interest products to carry strong conceptual value. When reimagined, a light switch becomes more than a purely functional device; it turns into a subtle yet powerful point of interaction between user, space, and technology.

To reflect the diversity of living environments and individual preferences, the design was developed in a range of materials and color variations. From understated finishes that integrate seamlessly into architectural settings to bold options that serve as visual accents, the switch adapts to different interiors while maintaining a consistent identity. Ultimately, the project explores the intersection of tradition and innovation—translating the language of digital interaction into a physical object and elevating a routine gesture into a more conscious and expressive experience.

Press to Escape, Press to Enter

My design approach is rooted in familiarity and symbolic meaning. The concept draws direct inspiration from two of the most universally recognized keys on a computer keyboard:
ESC (Escape) and Enter.

These keys embody intuitive actions—canceling, exiting, confirming, and proceeding—seamlessly translating this digital logic into a clear and meaningful way of controlling light within a physical space.
