In 2014, Leica Camera AG celebrated the 60th anniversary of its legendary M rangefinder system with the release of a strictly limited special edition: the Leica M Edition 60. Developed in a run of only 600 units worldwide, this project marked a unique moment in Leica’s history, reinterpreting the digital camera through the lens of analog purity.
The design of the camera and its packaging was developed under the supervision of Mark Shipard at the Audi Design Studio Munich. In collaboration with Christoph Gredler and the Audi design team, we explored multiple design directions for this limited edition, guided by the core values of simplicity, authenticity, and precision.
Minimalist yet sophisticated
The Leica M Edition 60 stands out as a radical statement in contemporary camera design. Unlike conventional digital cameras, it intentionally omits a rear LCD display, encouraging a purely analog-style shooting experience. This bold decision reflects Leica’s heritage while redefining the relationship between photographer and device. The camera is paired with a Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 lens, both crafted with exceptional attention to detail and finished in stainless steel, emphasizing durability and timelessness.
My contribution to the project focused on the development of both camera design proposals and the complete packaging experience. The challenge was to create a presentation that would not only protect and house the product but also communicate the significance of the 60-year milestone. For the packaging, I developed three core concepts, each based on a distinctive circular form language inspired by the iconic geometry of the Leica camera body. This approach established a strong visual and conceptual connection between the product and its container. The round shape served as a unifying design element, symbolizing continuity, precision, and the enduring legacy of the Leica M system.
The final packaging solution resulted in a minimalist yet sophisticated presentation, combining clarity of form with high-quality materials and refined detailing. The set includes the camera, lens, accessories, certification, and a carefully designed sequence of boxes—from outer packaging to the presentation case—each contributing to a layered and ceremonial unboxing experience.
The design language reflects a balance between technical precision and understated luxury, aligning with Leica’s philosophy of reducing objects to their essential purpose while maintaining emotional and tactile richness.
Every element of the packaging was considered as part of a cohesive system, reinforcing the exclusivity and collectible nature of the edition.
This project represents a meaningful exploration of how industrial design, heritage, and user experience can intersect. Contributing to a product that celebrates such an important milestone for Leica was both a creative and professional highlight, demonstrating the power of restraint, clarity, and authenticity in design.
